What is Real Ale & CAMRA Bridgnorth ? | The Hare and Hounds Bridgnorth

The Hare and Hounds is very proud to be featured in CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2011 & 2012 for its real ales. But what is real ale and why do we think it's so much better than a keg ale ?

CAMRA describes real ales this way

"In the early 1970s CAMRA coined the term ‘real ale' to make it easy for people to differentiate between the bland processed beers being pushed by the big brewers and the traditional beers whose very existence was under threat.

Many pubs and brewers use the term to describe their beers, but, just to keep you confused, they are also called cask beers, cask-conditioned ales or even real beer ! In the pub the huge majority of real ales are served using traditional hand-pulls, rather than through modern fonts, but there are some exceptions to this, so if in any doubt, just ask.

Real ale is a natural, living product. By its nature this means it has a limited shelf life and needs to be looked after with care in the pub cellar and kept at a certain temperature to enable it to mature and bring out its full flavours for the drinker to enjoy."

So what Real Ales do the Hare & Hounds serve ?

Garry Aulton is very keen to support local breweries such as Hobsons, Enville, Ludlow and Holdens as well as simular small breweries from further afield. His reasoning he feels is very clear, he doesn't believe you get the quality from the larger breweries that you do from the smaller breweries.

As variety is the spice of life so is the range of real ales kept at the Hare & Hounds. Hobsons Town Crier & Hobsons Mild hold a regular place on the bar but they are supported by two other cask ales that change very week.

Local Shropshire Breweries

  Hobsons Brewery
Hobsons Brewery

Hobsons brewery was established in 1993 and moved to its present site at New House Farm, on Tenbury Road approximately 500 metres SE of the town centre, in 1995. The brewery brews and delivers its beer to public houses within a 50-mile radius, as well as bottle-conditioned ale to shops in the area. Its regular mild, best bitter and strong bitter ales have won taste awards in recent years, and the mild was chosen to be a guest beer in the House of Commons bar in 2008. In 2009 the brewery installed a small wind turbine, which generates around a third of the electricity required by the brewery, and the company use other environmentally sustainable technologies

  Holdens Brewery
Holdens Brewery

Holdens Brewery is a family-run brewery which was founded in 1915 in the Park Inn at Woodsetton, Dudley. Holdens is a brewpub producing cask ale. It has 22 tied houses, and is the newest regional brewery.
It was formed when Edwin Holden took over the Park Inn, built in 1892, on George Street in Woodsetton. The pub is still owned by Holdens Brewery.

  Ludlow Brewery
Ludlow Brewery

Ludlow has a long tradition and history of brewing, but the last brewery in town, the Ludlow and Craven Arms Brewery, shut up shop in the 1930s, however it was the dream of Gary and Alison Walters to rekindle this industry in Ludlow and in May 2006 Ludlow Brewing Company’s first mash was started.
September 2006 saw the brewery gain its first awards. Gold won the CAMRA Severn Valley Railway beer festival along with the annual beer festival held at the Sun Inn Leintwardine. Gold was soon followed by The Boiling Well, a Best and a Black Knight.
Further awards have been picked up including the distinction of becoming CAMRA’s Shropshire Beer of the year in 2008/2009.

  Enville Brewery
Enville Brewery

Enville have been brewing quality cask ales for the licensed trade since 1993 and the range has grown as demand for variety has encouraged us to introduce ales which satisfy a wide range of tastes.
Everyone knows our Enville Ale but an increasing number are enjoying our other unique offerings - Enville Ginger, Enville Gothic and Enville White have all become firm favourites with discerning drinkers and along with our IPA and LPA we have sought to provide a good range of tastes, flavours and strengths to suit every palate.
